Release Date: Out Now
Genre: Adventure
Publisher: Double Fine Productions
Developer: Double Fine Productions
Adventure game genre is very popular in the 80s and 90s. LucasArts is one example of many developers who profit from this genre. Thanks to one of its flagship member Tim Schafer, LucasArts successfully outlined many legendary titles such as The Secret of Monkey Island, Full Throttle and Grim Fandango. After the release of Grim Fandango, Tim Schafer out of LucasArts to form Double Fine Productions which still stands today.
In 2012, Tim Schafer who had left the adventure genre for 14 years finally come back again with a Kickstarter campaign that ended with great success. After two years of success of Double Fine Adventures in Kickstarter, ultimately adventure game made in this legendary maestro released. The game appeared in the form of Broken Age.
Details
Broken Age is a timeless coming-of-age story of barfing trees and talking spoons. Vella Tartine and Shay Volta are two teenagers in strangely similar situations, but radically different worlds. The player can freely switch between their stories, helping them take control of their own lives, and dealing with the unexpected adventures that follow.
Check the full review that changes the game through Kickstarter fundraising through the article below.
Broken Age has a story taken from two points of view are completely different. The first viewpoint tells the story of a girl named Vella will be sacrificed by the village as part of a traditional ritual of the village. While the standpoint of both told me about Shay, a boy who lives alone in a space ship and very bored with her daily routine.
Embodiment Adventure Classics truthfully
While we were trying to raise funds through Kickstarter, Schafer and Double Fine Productions team did something that could be considered reckless. They made a campaign requesting funds of $ 400,000 (about USD 450 million), without giving a concept, an idea, let alone a prototype, they had nothing but promises that this will be the adventure game truly classic and is done directly by Tim Schafer.
Sounds quite mad indeed if you ask for that much money just by promises in the form of words alone, but in fact the campaign, titled Double Fine Adventure managed to successfully pocketed more than $ 3.3 million (approximately US $ 4 billion). Proof of that is the fans were already greatly missed by genre which had controlled the game world this many years ago.
Turns Double Fine managed to fulfill their promise, Double Fine Adventure, later known as the end title is Broken Age, it has all the best the essence of the classic adventure game. Here you can find a story that is a cool combination of a serious theme and lots of comedy, puzzles that will force you to think and interact with all the objects that exist in the game, and the quality of the writing that is guaranteed to make you really enjoy the experience of playing the way you feel ,
Here you will find a special innovation of gameplay, the only innovation I found was a feature to play two characters who have different backgrounds and viewpoints freely. You are free to choose to play whichever comes first without worrying about not understand the whole story. In the middle of the game you are also free to change characters whenever you want without having to wait for changes in chapter, and without worrying about the last piece of the story is missing.
The above may be arguably as innovations in terms of narrative rather than gameplay, but for a game genre adventure in which part of the gameplay and the narrative is an inseparable unity, innovation is certainly an excellent change without having to make the game lose its status as classic adventure game.
Stories Fantasy Imagination Without Limits
As an adventure game, it is not surprising if Broken Age has the high quality of the story, perhaps even this game is one game with the best story that was released last few years. Good story in Broken Age is not only possible thanks to the idea of writing the story as well as high quality but also a great way of delivery (which I will discuss further below).
Broken Age tells the story of two young men. Vella, a girl who becomes a victim of an ancient tradition, and Shay, a young man who is bored with his daily routine and expect a thrilling adventure. At first glance it looks like the two characters have no connection at all, it is increasingly backed by world setting Vella is like taken from a fantasy story, as opposed to 180 degrees by setting the world Shay taken from a sci-fi story.
Throughout the game you can only guess what the exact relationship between the two characters that you can control it. Not infrequently during the game you have unknowingly created his own theory about the relationship of these characters, before this game makes you produce a variety of other theories that answer in your own head you can only be sure at the end of Act 1 game.
Narrative tricks that are used to make this happen is very great. Although the novel and the film can also make the experience the same narrative, but the storytelling is in Broken Age can only be enjoyed through interactive media such as video games, and Double Fine proven to maximize the potential of this interactive media.
The totality of Audio and Visual
Besides having a very good story, another thing that made me very fond of Broken Age is the quality of its graphics. This game has graphics with hand drawing style looks very beautiful. The combination of colors as well as the quality of the illustrations in Broken Age guaranteed to make you feel at home playing this game for hours.
The visual quality is the more you can enjoy when you play the part of a story that does have a setting Vella colorful world, reminded me of a painting or a book of fairy tales illustrated.
But it does not look boring part Shay yes. Although the setting of the story is not as beautiful Shay Vella world where the story takes place, part Shay has more mystery and comedy that makes you want to continue the story of Shay.
Age Broken presentation quality is also supported by the audio that does not mess around. This game has a soundtrack that really reminds me of a regular TV show playing in the late afternoon or Sunday morning.
In addition to the soundtrack, the audio portion of the game is also reinforced by a range of renowned actor voice. Some famous personalities who are involved in this game, among others adallah Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings), Jack Black (Tenacious D), Wil Wheaton (Star Trek), and others.
Differences Between PC and iPad Version
As I briefly alluded to above. This game was released first on the PC last January before the release of the iPad the other day. Because the PC version of Broken Age is also a game point n 'click, so most control is only done with the mouse only. This makes porting Broken Age to the iPad is not too difficult because not many changes in controls that should be done. Think of it as your finger is the replacement of the mouse pointer.
The only thing I see different is the eye icon and the gear icon on the screen. The eye icon serves to indicate any object on the screen that you can invite interaction. This control is different from the PC that will tell you what object could be invited to interact with the way hover your mouse over the object in question, so if you want to continue the game, sometimes you have to twirling pointer to all parts of the screen in order to know if a particular section can be clicked.
The second difference is the gear icon that will stop (pause) your game and displays in-game menu. This function in the PC can be accessed by pressing the Esc key on the keyboard.
So far the only difference was that I felt most of the PC version and the iPad. So you do not need to be confused about which version to play this game, because both are equally good.
Verdict: A Story That Must Not Be Missed
Broken Age (newly released Act 1), may be a short game. You can finish the game in just four hours. Nevertheless, the brief experience that feels very solid and valuable. Think of it through this game you watch two films can you control the main character.
Suppose you are a fan of classic adventure gaming, Broken skip Age is definitely a great sin. But if you're not a man accustomed to the classical genre, you still have to try a genre that had controlled the game industry, coupled with many modern touches make guaranteed not to be disappointed.
Broken Age Act 1 is available for PC, Mac, and Linux since last January. For iOS (for the iPad) is a new game available last week, and also promised Android and Ouya will be caught this cool game though there has been no further information when it will be released.
